There was a sudden blinding light, causing me to stumble back along the path and shield my eyes with my arm. I jogged along this path every evening as the sun set beneath the horizon, returning home shortly after night had fallen upon my small town. Today had seemed no different than any other spring evening; it was crisp, bordering on chilly. The thin sheen of sweat over my forehead was just enough to cool my face against the heat my body produced on my run. Tonight, though, as the bright light shone down on me from above, I felt a rush of warmth fill me.

Between parted fingers, I peered out to see what could be causing this sudden disruption, but couldn’t make out a single thing. I called out, softly at first, before shouting out a nervous, “Hello? Is anyone there?” All of a sudden, I realized that everyone’s warnings had been right — someone shouldn’t be jogging along this trail alone so late at night. It just wasn’t safe.

From a distance, I heard a strange whooshing noise. Despite the heat I felt, goosebumps spread across my arms and shoulders, making the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand at attention. What is happening?

“Hello?” I called out again. Then all was silent. The light was gone. The trees, the grass… everything was still. Had I dreamed of all that had just happened? Despite the urge to run, I felt like I was frozen in place. My brain was screaming out instructions to me, but my muscles refused to move. It was not for lack of trying; I simply couldn’t do it.

Behind me, a rustling of leaves from the nearby bushes sounded someone — something’s — arrival. I wanted desperately to run, to cry out, but remained in place. As the footsteps drew closer, softly padding against the dirt trail beneath our feet, I began to feel faint with fear. This is not how I wanted to die. This was not when I wanted to die.

And yet, the moment I felt a soft hand cover my eyes, the figure behind me supporting my body before another flash of blinding light filled the space, I was suddenly okay. I had accepted my fate. I felt free, light, floating. Was I floating? It was as if there was nothing beneath my shoes, empty air as I rose, sightless, to an unknown place. This took a moment. This took years. Something was happening to my body, and it was impossible to determine an exact timeframe.

Somehow, though, I found myself on my back. The surface beneath me was comfortable, but I was still unable to see anything aside from a great light all around me. Hands roved across my skin, my clothing no longer on my body. I felt simultaneously hyper-aware and dreamy, unable to make much of the situation other than the physical sensations that I could feel. All other senses had seemed to dim.

Suddenly, there was stretching between my legs. I felt my knees spread apart and a long, girthy probe slide into me. It was warm and pleasant, sliding in and out of me at a crawling speed to create such a feeling of fullness that my heart felt like it might explode. It was ecstasy. Despite my mouth opening to speak, no words came out. The rhythmic, gentle thrusting was soon accompanied by something thick and wet stroking along me, behind the probe. I struggled to see what the source of these sensations were, but was frozen in place. I had no other option but to enjoy these moments for what they were, especially if they would be my last.

If this is what it was like to die, to leave the world in an eye-rolling and body-shaking orgasm, then perhaps death wasn’t such an awful experience, after all.

And, so, I died — or, at least, I thought that I did — in a scream that never escaped my lips. In an earth-shattering orgasm. Feeling fuller than I had ever felt before. More vulnerable. More blissful. This impression on me is what carried me through into a deep sleep, a little death, where everything finally went dark. No longer was I drowning in the light; I had finally found a sense of peace.

When I awoke, I was lying on the path where I had been jogging. The night sky was stretched overhead, speckled with stars and a pregnant moon. Something had happened to me that night… but what?
